SHERIFF FREEMAN OFFICIALLY INTRODUCES THE NEW CHIEF JAILER
 (April 3, 2008 - Atlanta, Georgia) On April 3, 2008, Sheriff Myron E. Freeman hosted a reception to allow the community and key personnel within the Fulton County justice system to meet the new Chief Jailer. Mr. Edward McNeil was sworn in as Chief Jailer on March 7, 2008. Sheriff Freeman said, “The job of Chief Jailer is one of the most important jobs in Fulton County. It is crucial for him to meet all of the participants in the criminal justice system and members of the community that he will serve. All of us are affected by the Jail in one way or another.”
Sheriff Freeman conducted a nationwide search to find just the right person to fill the position of Chief Jailer for the Fulton County Jail. More than 70 people submitted applications. The top candidates were interviewed by a Community Review Board convened by Sheriff Freeman. After a thorough selection process, the Sheriff hired Mr. Edward McNeil. The Chief Jailer is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Jail at 901 Rice Street in Northwest Atlanta.
Mr. Edward McNeil comes to Fulton County from Springfield, Illinois where he served for more than a decade with the Illinois Department of Corrections. His background as a Deputy Director in the Illinois Department of Corrections along with his extensive knowledge in this field made him the obvious choice for Chief Jailer. Mr. McNeil said, “…I consider this an excellent opportunity to return to my home state of Georgia and work in its county seat. I am very enthusiastic about serving the citizens of Fulton County and using my experience and fresh outlook to make a positive impact on the jail.” Chief McNeil moved to Fulton County with his wife and two young sons.
