Sheriff Jackson Finds Excellent Use for Soon To Be

Discarded Coats

Some Fulton County residents will be warmer thanks to an idea Sheriff Theodore Jackson had to re-purpose 250 plus uniform coats.  The gently used garments were once worn by deputies.  The jackets had been stored in the agency's warehouse and were headed for the dumpster.  Sheriff Jackson decided that once the patches were removed, they could be given to citizens in need.  Jail staff cleaned the coats and prepared them for distribution.

The Community Outreach Section partnered with the Coalition for the People's Agenda and the Chapel of Christian Love Baptist Church to find people who could use the jackets.  Reverend Dr. J.A. Milner did not have to look far.  The church has an outreach program to help formerly homeless families called Community Concerns/Odyssey Villas, an apartment community refurbished to house intact, formerly homeless families.

Sheriff Jackson and deputies went to Odyssey Villas in Vine City to distribute the coats just in time to fight the winter cold.  Recipients tried on the jackets on the spot.  The coats were fresh from the washing machine and in great shape.

Distracted Driving Course for Teens(August 10, 2009 - Atlanta, Georgia)

Do you text and drive?  How about using the mobile phone while driving?  Those of just some of the distractions discussed during a driving course for teenagers that was sponsored by Allstate Insurance.

The Community Outreach staff helped show teen drivers the dangers of operating a motor vehicle while distracted.  Sergeant Denise Bennett served as a "distractors" while riding with a teen motorist as he navigated his vehicle through an obstacle course.

The first trip through the course was nice and quiet.  The second and subsequent trips were enhanced with loud music, talking, and other annoying tricks used by the "distractors".  Outside factors included a police helicopter, a Sheriff's patrol vehicle, and a motorcycle officer from APD.  One teen reported that he never heard the siren or Deputy Ernest Jones's voice through a loud speaker instructing him to pull over.

Parents and teens agreed that this exercise was an excellent learning experience.
